| Andrew 'Divne' Divine has to be
one of THE unsung heroes of the turntables. He was fashioning a party-minded
hectic eclectica way before it was chic, down at the legendary Divine Saturday
nighter, setting a blueprint some famous ex-techno deejays have recently
adopted with less finesse. He was poached for Hi Karate back in '96 cos he was the only other deejay in Glasgow risking the old-skool revival, dropping dirty beats amongst the bubblegum and northern soul at his residency. Since then he has become an integral part of the night, broadening the HK palette with the deepest of funk, the rocksteadiest reggae, the sweetest of soundtrack soul and ... eh .. the most tumultuous techno n'all. Confusing? Downright enriching more like. Despite risking accusations of frivolity with some bizarre costume changes during sets, this man is serious about his tunes. Teams of highly-trained elves are even now scouting the earth in Mr. D's employ, searching out those raw, rare 7" singles for the Karate kids' dancefloor delectation. But the boy doesn't stop at having a collection of breaks to rival the realest of hip hop producers. He's also got a wardrobe Liberace would've been proud of, a thriving graphic design business, a sideline in chair upholstery, and - last but not least - a charming and beautiful lady-friend. Which just goes to show: many of his records may be in mono, but his life is in surround-sound. He's the D to the I to the V to the N to the E - if he ever locates that missing 'I', surely all the fame and fortune that've long been his due will bless him finally. I feel blessed just to stand near him. If he let me stand any closer, I think I would truly be saved. |
